Saudi Arabia

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia lies at the heart of the Arabian Peninsula in the Middle East surrounded on one side by the historic Red Sea. It is the largest state in Western Asia by land area and the second largest in the Arab world. Also known sometimes as the birthplace of Islam, the country is considered to be the religious hub for Muslims comprising of the two holy mosques known as Masjid al-Haram and Masjid al-Nabwi.
The local population of Saudi Arabia is around 27 million, out of which around 9 million are expatriates and only about 16 million people are Saudi nationals. What is most interesting is that during the time of the Muslim pilgrimage, the country experiences a wave around 2 – 3 Million Muslims travelling to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj. What is more fascinating is that the country is surprisingly well equipped to handle such an influx every year.
Saudi Arabia is a petroleum based economy, with about 75% of budget revenues and 90% of export earnings for the nation deriving from oil exports. Saudi Arabia is said to contain the largest discovered oil reserves amounting to about one fifth of the grand total for the entire globe. The handsome revenues earned by the nation allow the country to operate as a welfare state. The government structure of the country is an absolute monarchy ruled by the Al-Saud family.
With a handsome amount of petro-dollars coming into the country, the citizens of Saudi Arabia are experiencing a flourishing lifestyle. The government also plans to reduce its dependence on oil by privatizing the power and telecommunications industry. At the present time, the largest Telecom provider in Saudi Arabia is Saudi Telecom Company (STC) which also owns the largest mobile network in the nation. Other private operators in the country include Etisalat / Mobiliy and Zain Mobile.
