India

Republic of India is the seventh largest country by geographical area, the second most popular country and the most populous democracy in the world. According to the estimate of 2010, India’s total population is 1,179,618,000. It is bordered by Pakistan to the west, China, Nepal and Bhutan to the north; and Bangladesh and Burma to the east.
The Telecommunication Industry of India is the third largest telecommunication network in the world and the second largest in terms of number of wireless connections. It has about 525 million mobile phone connections as of Dec 2009. The telecom services market is regulated by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

With the advent of voice, the telecommunication market in India has changed more than ever before. voice Technology has become a growth engine in wholesale market over the past few years. For the fact that a large number of Indian expats are located all over the globe, the number of incoming and outgoing international calls to and from India is massive. India Mobile share is almost 80% of the total international incoming traffic to India, of which BSNL enjoys approximately 25% of the total mobile traffic share. The tariff to call India has reduced drastically since last couple of years and hence, most of the incoming traffic is on licensed routes and there is a very little room left for illegal operators, primarily because the cost of termination is very low.

Since India is the populous and among the largest countries of Asia, there are thousands of dial codes across India. To simplify them, most of the voice providers break them out in India ROC, India Mobile Others and India Mobile BSNL. However, there are few who break out the popular states such as Tamil Nadu, Gujrat, Andhra Pradesh and major cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi etc. as well.

VoIP industry in India has witnessed strangulated growth since its arrival in April 2002. Till the end of 2005, only ISPs were permitted to offer VoIP or Internet telephony in India. However, the Government has now permitted National Long Distance (NLD) operators to connect to ISPs through public Internet (Internet cloud) for unrestricted VoIP services. Service providers in India are now expecting encouraging policy of the Government.
