SriLanka

On the scale of a world map, Sri Lanka appears to hang like a tiny teardrop over the Indian Ocean. With 21.2 Million of population, island of Sri Lanka occupies a strategic location near major Indian Ocean sea lanes.
Sri Lanka Telecommunication Industry is operated by two main authorities namely Telecommunications Authority of Sri Lanka (TASL) and Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) where 51% shares are held by the government.
For mobile services in the country, TASL has licensed five major cellular telephone operators.
  • Dialog Telekom Plc
  • Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel
  • Etisalaat
  • Hutchison Telecommunications Lanka (Pvt) Ltd
  • Bharti Airtel Lanka (Pvt) Ltd

For Landline services, TASL has licensed the following operators.
  • SriLanka Telecom Plc
  • Suntel Limited
  • LankaBell (Pvt) Ltd
Growth Rate for mobile market in the country has been very healthy with a consistent increase over the past few years. Mobile penetration in Sri Lanka is forecasted to reach to 125.3% by 2014.
In Sri Lanka, an operator with a voice telephone license can use voice in the country. Voice is illegal when provided by ISPs who do not have a license to provide voice telephony.
Although wholesale volumes have increased substantially over the past five years, margins have conversely declined. This has a profound impact on all players including telecoms, aggregators, pure play wholesalers and single route operators.
