Egypt

Egypt, well known for its pyramids and ancient civilizations, has been the most important country of Africa. Arab Republic of Egypt stands as 16th most populous country of the globe with current population of around 79 million. The country is considered as most important economic partner in the continent for its ideal location and presence of highly fertile Nile Valley, where most of the Economic activity takes place.
The journey of success began in 1999 when ministry of communication and information technology was created in Egypt. Establishment of mobile services a year before led to penetrate the market by 4% and the penetration rate has surprisingly increased since then to reach 72% in early 2010. Success continues when Egypt became pioneer in Africa for launching 3rd Generation Mobile services in 2007. Since then, the licensed mobile operators –Mobinil, Vodafone and Etisalat – have launched a wide range of advanced services. The end of Fixed Line Monopoly in 2006 brought up new opportunities for growth and made the incumbent the owner of the largest fixed line market in Africa and Arab region.
Voice, including voice is offered only by the incumbent, Telecom Egypt and subject to normal voice regulations. Otherwise, voice is licensed only for VPN for use within the same enterprise. PC to PC voice is allowed without a license.
In wholesale markets, the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has been relatively liberal in allowing operators to enter into commercial service agreements with each other by adopting a cost-plus model for fixing the service prices. However, the retail market is comparatively more regulated, with the NTRA requiring the operators to get their tariffs approved and complying with the service quality standards set by it.
Nevertheless, a major portion of the total international calls are still carried by unlicensed market players, because many operators are not yet passing on the full cost savings from voice to their customers.
