| With the fast growing trend of voice market, the telecom industry has changed in Bangladesh over the past 2 years. Around 60 million minutes of international calls are made to and from Bangladesh a day and hundreds of people have been engaged in this business of voice. The government issued LDI licenses to different operators in August 2008, which has finally broken the monopoly of BTCL in this market. Despite efforts from the government, illegal voice business is very rampant in Bangladesh and probably grabs almost 50% of the total market share. BTRC has issued 3 licenses for International Gateways (IGW). The incumbent operator BTTB (now BTCL) has also been awarded the IGW license under the same terms and conditions as that of the private operators. It has also provided means to ensure proper implementation of interconnection break monopoly and facilitate affordable communication. |
